6 Things To Take Advantage of Before Graduation

By Kelsey Lange on February 27, 2017

The best four years of your life can seem to go by much too quickly. While it seems you are constantly busy as it is, there are a bunch more things to do on campus that I’m sure you, and many students alike, haven’t given much thought.

While walking to class take a look around — there are so many things that are specifically for you to take advantage of. It is not every day that your environment is filled with activities and amenities that are structured for your success or enjoyment.

Student discounts

Student discounts are everywhere, the most obvious being on campus or in your college town. Make sure to bring your college ID with you wherever you plan to purchase. Most grocery stores close to college campuses give up to a 15 percent discount. This also goes for local businesses.

Many clothing stores also do student discounts. To name a few brands, Top Shop, J. Crew, Oasis, ASOS, Charlotte Russe, and Ralph Lauren all supply student discounts at checkout. Apple, Sony, HP, and Dell are also companies that can cut your price down while you’re in school.

Career centers

Though career services are a part of every college campus, not everyone takes advantage of them. Do not feel that because you are not in your junior or senior year you cannot use this to benefit you.

The career services center can help you land a part-time job or internship, something huge for your resume while still in school. Job search assistance, as well as resume and cover letter help, is something you want to constantly use. The people who work there are specifically trained for your success and it will always help to have someone who makes you feel less stressed and more confident.

The career development center goes hand in hand with having a good relationship with your advisor. Make sure to always use your advisor’s advice and guidance while choosing courses. Advisors are also there to help with opportunities like incorporating an internship into your schedule and getting the most out of your 15 credits per semester.

Connections

Connections are key, and though your favorite professor might not have been assigned as your advisor, this does not mean that they are not there to help in any way they can. Office hours and emailing are always open to students. This is your time to always ask questions you have as well as asking for help. You never know, professors may be willing to give you a letter of recommendation or a job connection after your four years.

Library

The library has much more to offer than you think. Many might be unaware that you can check out most required textbooks through your library for a specific amount of time. This can save you a lot of money considering some texts can get up to $200. With saving money in mind, take full advantage of the computer labs and library computers, laptops, and printers. Many students work better in an environment where they feel motivated to get their work done. Take it upon yourself to see if you are one of those people. Bring some headphones or go with a few friends, and you might surprise yourself how much better you work at the library.

Health services

The Health and Wellness Center might be the last thing on your mind, but health services are not something extremely accessible outside of college campuses. If you need medications, screenings, or psychological help, do not second guess taking a trip to your health center.

A healthy student means a healthy lifestyle. A free gym membership is not something you want to throw away. Your fitness center is within walking distance, and accessible every day. Work out in your free time; you will regret it when you don’t have a free gym at home.

Friends

Your friends are something that you should always cherish while at school. The people you meet in college will impact you for the rest of your life and you may not be able to maintain close friendships after graduation. Take advantage of the time that you have with these people and living so closely to those you love.

Also, do not take for granted living in an environment where everyone you meet is your age and in the same point in their lives as you are. Never again will you be able to meet as many people that are so similar to you. Meet as many people as you can on your campus, branch out, and find those that you connect with.

“The best four years of your life” may just seem like a saying to you, but if you choose to take advantage of all of the opportunities that are there for you, it might seem a little more realistic.
